It is usually the Scientist and Medical profesionals that show the compassion to the people that would benefit. The problem is Marijuana has become one of the top unethical political movements. Why is it a political battle? Anyone the reads the studies and research released on Marijuana's medical acheivements can not ethically deny its medical uses. I remember watching something with Al Gore once and he said that when he started politics he was in total shock that getting scientific proof of something was not good enough to make changes. He was talking about the environment but the same holds true for Marijuana. We need people in office that will take the scientific research and apply the risk analysis to that to make the best choices for the people that voted them into that office.
