Unfortunately, Tricky Dicky was right.  We did defeat both the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese.  It was after they were defeated, during the Ford administration, the liberals in Congress surrendered and North Vietnam re-invaded the South.  As a result, millions of innocent South Vietnamese were slaughtered while the "Jane Fondas" in Hollywood sipped champaigne and congratulated each other on their victory over democracy.
